My heart is happy when my hands are busy

As a scientific-based artist, designer and craftsman, I exist in a world of storytelling and building environments. My DNA was formed by makers and craftsman. My memories are a marked with love and a supportive upbringing. I am one of the lucky ones — taught that I could make anything with enough time and with enough ambition.

There’s a richness not just in the final product, but the connection to the process. That tête-à-tête dialogue between art and design; the push and pull of each love will forever be back and forth in me. Fiber artist, pigment maker, painter, ceramic artist, formulator, designer, photographer. Master of none, but how I love persisting in the land of my imagination.

Materials Girl

Deep in my ethos I've always been conscious of our footprint – even as a little girl. Before I buy anything I need to know where it came from and consider it's endlife. What is it made of and what kind of energy (and passion) went into making it?

My great grandmother (Tatty) could look at a coat or dress in a store window, return home and make it for my grandmother. This lovely, fearless Scottish woman who immigrated at 18 was fearless and could do anything. She taught my mom to knit and sew who taught me. I loved hearing stories about Tatty and was so incredibly fortune to spend time with her in my college years. She inspired me to make everything — clothes, upholstering family or vintage pieces, making fixtures...on and on. In my design work, I often bring in my fine arts background as often as possible.

The time and effort it takes to create a product (whatever it is) should mean something and it serve a purpose. If you'd like to understand me and how I work, this is it. Our products should be cherished not discarded without consideration — they should last and be made with quality materials. Above all, you should know where it came from. I apply these concepts in my design work, encouraging clients to look to the future. Not only does this stretch their investment in me but creates a connection to their own brand.

Narratives I enjoy creating are often stem from natural and art history. History strengthens design concepts, creates meaning, and perhaps remind you of a person or place you knew and loved. My mom used to say that when she makes something for someone she puts all her love into that person the whole time she's making. I think I've always been that way. More often than not, lucid dreaming is heavily part of my client work and personal, so fully entrenched in the process. Associating a person, a memory or impression makes life work living, and this is what makes us entirely human.
